    What do arc faults and air bags have in common?

    The key is to extinguish the arc before it can cause any damage. ABB’s UFES does this by making a near-instantaneous connection to earth, snuffing out the arc within 4 milliseconds. This super-fast response is triggered by a light and current sensor that detects a developing arc. This sets off tiny, ultra-fast, gas generators, similar to those used in cars to instantly inflate air bags. In UFES, the gas effectively throws the earthing switch and extinguishes the arc, before it can cause any damage.

    The UFES system, suitable for rated voltages up to 40.5 kV and rated short-time withstand currents up to 63 kA, is an active internal arc fault protection solution for new internal arc classified medium-voltage switchgear as well as for existing older generation switchgear. It helps to avoid serious damage to the switchgear, the equipment and the direct environment. Furthermore it enables the minimization of pressure relief arrangements in switchgear installation rooms with limited access.

After partial decontamination of the substation, ABB MV Service installed a completely new 10 kV switchgear system equipped with the innovative UFES (Ultra Fast Earthing Switch) arc eliminating technology. After verifying the advantages of the UFES retrofit solution at the 10 kV ABB switchgear, it was important for the customer that also the non-ABB switchgear is upgraded to the highest level of internal arc protection.
