Energy Surge Protective Devices
The comprehensive OVR range consists of three types of surge protective devices to protect the power distribution network :
Type 1 Surge Protective Devices
In order to discharge into the ground most of the energy generated by current surges entering the premises through power lines or through the external lightning protection system, distribution boards should be equipped with Type 1 SPDs.
The OVR Type 1 SPDs of ABB use the MOV technology. These devices have an impulse current capability of 15 kA (in 10/350 µs waveshape), available in single or multi pole versions, and are able to handle direct lightning strike. Their protection level is low (Up = 1.2 kV) and there is no need for a decoupling coil.
Type 2 SPDs
Type 2 Surge Protective Devices enable a further reduction of overvoltage, because downstream of the distribution board where Type 2 SPDs are installed, overvoltage can still get into the electric system.
Their technology consists mainly on varistors and they are adapted to all types of networks (IT, TT, TNC, TNS) and all network voltages from 57 to 600 V. In addition, they offer a high energy discharge capability (up to 100 kA in 8/20 µs waveshape)
Two options are available :
- the Safety reserve for preventive maintenance
- the remote indicator integrated in the product or with optical monitoring kit.
Type 3 SPDs
The remaining overvoltage can be diverted to the ground through additional protection for very sensitive or expensive equipment, such as HiFi systems, computers, or TV sets with a Type 3 SPD.
Type 3 SPDs offer a terminal protection of equipment. They are adapted to 230/400V, for TT and TN networks in multi pole versions.
Telecom surge protective devices
For the data transmission network, transmission line surge protective devices (OVR TC) provide protection against transient overvoltages for equipment connected to telephone lines (digital or analog), computer links or current loops for voltages of 6V, 12V, 24V, 48V or 200V.
