ABB switchgear to enable reliable power supply to petrochemical park in China

November 23, 2017 - ABB’s compact gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology to boost reliability and support Hengli, one of China’s largest petrochemical refinery complexes

Located in Dalian, a city in northeastern China, Hengli Petrochemical Industrial Park is one of the country’s largest petrochemical refinery complexes with an annual production of 6.6 million tons of purified terephthalic acid for polyester production.

In such large refinery operations, reliable power supply is crucial to ensure uninterrupted production. In a power system, a switchgear controls and protects the network from all types of system faults that could occur, such as lightning strikes or short-circuits which that could potentially lead to network failure.

ABB will design, deliver and commission 110 and 220-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear and medium voltage circuit breakers with diagnostic features to be installed at two substations that will supply power to the petrochemical complex. The compact design of ABB’s GIS technology allows a space sav-ing of up to 90 percent compared to air-insulated switchgear.

"The deployment of ABB’s compact and robust GIS technology will enable reliable power supply to this prestigious petrochemical project,” said Giandomenico Rivetti, Managing Director of ABB’s High Volt-age products business within the company’s Power Grids division. “We are pleased to have another op-portunity to contribute to China’s chemical, oil and gas sector, as we do with many other key sectors to support China’s economic and social development.”

In a power system GIS controls and protects the network from failures and avoids power outages. The GIS is the ideal product to facilitate reliable energy supply and can be safely operated in confined spac-es and harsh environments. ABB has always been and continues to drive innovation in GIS technology and provides a complete range of products for all ratings and applications from 72.5 kV to 1200 kV matching current and future requirements for modern switchgears. As a market leader in high-voltage GIS technology, ABB has a global installed base of more than 30,000 bays.
